Today marks five weeks since I hurt my ankle. And this morning I managed to do my full mile plus morning walk without any issues. My dog was happy about this as well. At 18 years old the definition of “walking it off” after such an injury meant maybe a day. I guess now over 40 years later “walking it off” means five weeks. Who knew?
But I’ve also made a slight deviation with the 6V6 Curly Maple amp.
I did my initial power and distortion measurements in this amp with a pair of the old style, S-shaped envelope, 6V6Gs. Some of the readers reminded mt that my tubes are likely over 70 years old at this point. And one of the channels was a little different from the other. As such, I decided that I might really need to take at least the power and distortion measurements again but with a set of new tubes.
So I ordered a nice set of TAD 6V6GT-STR Redbase tubes from Antique Electronics Supply. These tubes should be here in in a week or so. Then I can take the power and distortion measurements again with new, matched tubes. I’ve also wanted to try out the TAD “Redbase” tubes for a while now and this was a good opportunity. I really liked the 6L6 new issue Tung-Sols I got for the 6L6 Spalted Alder amplifier. If the TAD “Redbase” are anywhere near as good, I’ll be very satisfied.
I’ll continue working on the write-up in the mean time. It just means that the final posting may be a little delayed. I am also curious to see how my old 6V6Gs hold up against a new set of premium tubes.
As always, questions and comments are welcome.
I am curious too since I have tubes that came from garage sales and attics – Thanks
Matt,
Not sure how much age matters (I’m 70) with tubes – operating hours do, but considering how they looked – they probably spent a lot of time giving people musical enjoyment. The TAD ones are new production and probably have a lot of enhancements to them.
BTW, at my age, it is very difficult to walk anything off. You slowly get a collection of permanent aches pains and battle scars – all a part of getting up there ๐
