I managed to get some time to perform the bulk of the chassis work on the new amp.
The wood chassis is finished with a deep oil finish. And all the metal for the chassis is cut, drilled and ready for painting. The wood turned out really nice.

I will now start getting the internals of the ring frame completed and all the front hardware mounted. I will also turn my attention to my nemesis… painting. We’ll have to see how that goes.
As always, questions and comments are welcome.
Please share which deep oil finish product you used – the resulting wood’s superb depth is amazing !
The finish on the chassis is Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil stock finish. The chassis has five thin coats applied by rubbing with a clean rag with a little oil applied to the rag.
Tru-Oil is a combination of linseed oil, tung oil, and a few others. But it also a catalyzed finish. What this means is that the oil has been heated in an oxygen free environment until it undergoes a chemical isomerization. The oil is then packaged oxygen free. When applied and exposed to oxygen in the atmosphere, it hardens as it drys. So after several coats it forms a very tough layer that is chemically and physically bonded to the surface. It’s also a beautiful finish. It’s really nice for smaller projects.
