So yesterday I posted that the top plate was complete. Today I can say that the new spud amplifier is totally complete and ready for testing.
This afternoon I got the top plate mechanically installed on the chassis and completed all the final wiring. Here’s how the inside looks.
I even installed the #47 indicator light and a 1A/250V fuse. Then I panicked.
In all of this planning I had not thought to ensure that there was an acceptable set of tubes for this amp in my stash. A few tense minutes pasted as I dug through the parts closet and finally came up with a nice set of GE 6EM7s and a GE 6CA4 rectifier.
Damn! Just now, as I was looking at the picture I just took, I realized that I had forgotten something rather important. I have not tied the chassis grounds together. The rear plate with the power/speaker/signal connections is tied to safety ground. However the top plate and front plates are not. I think I’ll get that done before I decide to apply mains power.
So soon it will be time for some initial power and voltage checks, then some time listening. The detailed characterization will come after I’ve decided I like the sound. Time to sally forth.

Just a comment; Man that main filter choke is HUGE! (nowhere near as big as smoothing reactors used in high power industrial DC power supplies, but quite large for home entertainment electronics)
Yup. That’s what Hammond calls the C14H form factor. Here are their dimensions.
The C14H is the biggest one they list in the 153-159 series. Curiously Triad has an almost identically sized choke, the C-14X which is 6H/240mA. Here is the size information from their data sheet.
The Hammond choke I used is a 159S rated at 4H/225mA. So for the same bulk I could get a triad with 50% higher inductance and a higher current rating.
When I first designed the amp I stipulated a triad C-14X in the design. But when I checked the parts closet I didn’t have one. But I did have the Hammond 159S. So I used that one. The power supply ripple reduction is still more than adequate.
