I took my time and was very patient. And it paid off in a finish that while not exceptional, is acceptable. I am talking about the top plate for the new amplifier, of course.
Given the level of frustration I experience every time I use spray paint the next project will definitely get its top plate from Front Panel Express. Here is the finished top plate for this amplifier.
While not a great finish it is nice enough that I can live with the results. It is a semi-gloss finish. There is a little surface imperfection but not too much. It almost looks intentional. Kind of like the finish on old test equipment from the 1950s.
I’ll let it sit for another 24 hours so the paint can finish curing (maybe). Then I will start carefully populating the top plate with all the hardware. With the painting and chassis behind me, I can now start actually assembling the amp.

Yes – sort of looks like a “crackle finish”. As you said “looks like the finish of 1950’s test equipment”. Considering this is a tube amp, a period appropriate finish.
